WMI trip to Russia

Led by the Rev. Dr. John Burgess as part of his Introduction to Eastern Orthodoxy class, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Orthodox worship and life in contemporary Russia. In Term 3, students will meet as a regular weekly class to reflect on their experience of Russian Orthodoxy and compare it to Protestantism. During the first week of the trip (Feb. 27-March 5), the group will attend and become familiar with the daily worship services that mark out the first week of the Orthodox Great Lent. During the second week (March 6-10), participants will hear lectures by professors from St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University in Moscow. Topics will include the holiness of God; the power of prayer and ritual; the beauty of worship; liturgy and the church calendar; and practices of fasting and praying with icons and relics. Participants will also make pilgrimages to Orthodox holy sites, such as the Holy-Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery, the Butovo Memorial to those who were martyred by the communists for their faith, and the Martha and Mary Convent, which provides a wide range of social ministries to Moscow’s poor and needy.

Choose a giving level

Encourage Me!

Students and others are able to participate in a World Mission Initiative mission opportunity because they are encouraged by a classmate, professor, WMI staff, and especially because of the financial support they are promised. Thank you for strengthening this promise through your gift of support!

Equip Me!

Participants gather for three WMI pre-trip preparation sessions before they leave for people and places completely new to them. Your gift helps equip participants to go into the world with spiritual readiness and cross-cultural awareness.

Pack Me!

WMI encourages participants to "pack light" by leaving behind both items and attitudes that might hinder their witness. Your gift resources participants with what they really need both in their suitcases and also in their hearts - humility, faith, and love - as they participate in God's mission.

Pray for Me!

WMI sends participants with a strong foundation of prayer and with confidence in the promise of the Holy Spirit's presence. Your gift of support for participants' travel costs gives tangible testimony to the strong prayer support that surrounds them as well.

Mobilize Me!

Participants are mobilized into God's mission in a lasting way when they form relationships, as happens through Christian partners around the globe who welcome WMI trip participants to join them in ministry. Your gift gives participants that opportunity to form lasting relationships with church leaders around the world.

Send Me!

Your gift encourages, equips, packs, prays for, and mobilizes participants well on their way to participating in what Jesus Christ is up to in another part of God's world! Thank you for sending participants on a life-changing, ministry-shaping World Mission Initiative trip!
